Have you ever gone shopping for plus size swimsuits in the past? You may have been able to find a few styles here at there at retailers like Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Avenue – but in my experience, the very best place to find swimsuits to flatter my curves has been online. Now I know what you’re thinking – buying swimwear online must be such a hassle! But here are some tips that will help you find a great cut and style that’s perfect for the pool, the beach, or just for lounging!

When shopping online for a plus-size swimsuit, it’s important to always check the size chart for the particular style you’re looking at. Some websites, like the popular retailer Always For Me, offer several different designers – all of whom utilize their own sizing charts that may have subtle differences. Buying a plus size bathing suit can be difficult as well because unlike purchasing separates (such as pants and tops), the swimsuit has to fit and flatter everything from your torso to your thighs, and depending upon your proportions, this can be a bit tricky. Thankfully, plus size designers are doing a great job at offering fits that accommodate larger breasts, a fuller tummy, and wider hips. You can even buy two-piece bathing suits like the tankini, which offers full-coverage briefs and a top that’s longer than a traditional bikini and similar to a tank top.

So be sure to study the size chart carefully, and keep in mind that if you wear a size 18 in Misses, you may be a size 14 or 16 in plus sizing. (Plus size swimsuits are specially cut for fuller figured women, as opposed to Misses clothes that are just sized up based on a regular size fit model.) You’ll also be able to find more flattering, fuller coverage swimsuits, often with enhancements such as breast minimizing, waist shaping, and tummy control. One very popular brand is called Miraclesuit, and claims to give the illusion of a slimmer silhouette when wearing one of their bathing suits. They’re a bit more spendy, but certainly worth looking into. Anything that will boost your confidence while wearing your swim suit is a bonus!

One other tip is to be sure to check the returns and exchanges policy before purchasing plus size swimsuits. It may be worth the initial investment to buy two bathing suits in different sizes, to ensure the perfect fit. I’ll be back soon to offer more tips and suggestions – until then, happy shopping!
